Stone cleaning in Peterborough Cathedral

On 22 November 2001 a fire broke out in Peterborough Cathedral. Extensive smoke damage and charring was caused to stone walls, decorative stone arches and the vaulted ceiling.

Cathedral Architects and conservators approached GBF Masonry Cleaning in view of their previous experience in the stone cleaning of historically important buildings.

The work required a careful and sensitive approach due to the importance of the structure and the need to blend the cleaned stone with the remaining stonework. In addition, the status of the Cathedral as a working building and place of worship meant all involved to conduct themselves in a manner befitting this environment while cleaning the stone.

"Clean-film" (a range of specialist solutions bound in latex) was applied using specialist spraying equipment. This was allowed to dry on the stone for a specified time to allow the solution to react and bind to the soot on the stonework. The latex was then removed to reveal a uniform clean ceiling with exactly the right colour to blend with adjacent areas of stone unaffected by the fire.

Painstaking attention was then paid to hand touching and sponging of any noticeable joins to ensure a finish with which the Cathedral Chapter and Architects were delighted.
